Preparing For Disaster

The Valley Churches United Mission's Disaster Relief Center is taking seriously the warnings of what El Nino could mean to mountain residents this winter.

A little preparation could go a long way! Take a weekend now and make a check list and prepare.

  1. Clear Drains
  2. Clean Gutters
  3. Hose your Roof to check for Leaks
  4. Check out trees that could be diseased of have broken limbs.
Be mindful of trees around you that could fall on your house.
  5. Check your neighborhood streets for alternative routes in case fallen trees or power lines block your main route.
  6. If you live in a flood zone and had to sand bag last December, get your sand bags now.

Items needed for an emergency:

  1. Lanterns, Flashlights, Batteries.
  2. A good AM radio tuned to 1080 KSCO for weather conditions.
  3. Rain Gear
  4. 5 Gallons of water for toilet flushing and 5 Gallons for drinking.
  5. Extra blankets or Sleeping Bags.
  6. Alternative ways to cook. Propane, Camp stove, Charcoal, Liter.
  7. Firewood for fireplace or stove.

Have a buddy relationship with a neighbor where children can wait if you are delayed because of road conditions.

The Valley Churches United Mission's Disaster Center will activate based on need. Sand bags have been purchased and our communications equipment has been tested and ready for use and we are building a flood wall to protect our storage area.

VCUM can be reached by calling 336-5651. Remember come rain or drought, it is better to be prepared and safe than sorry!
