Provided the Volunteer Center with rain boots, shovels, gloves and water to be used by volunteers helping residents dig out, clean up, or remove their belongings.

After Disaster - Response and Recovery
Tuesday, February 3rd 1998
The following agencies came to assist area victims and VCUM:
- Second Harvest Food Bank supplied water and food.
- Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry in Watsonville brought food.
- PG&E provided 2 large battery operated flood lights, to light the outside sand bagging area during power outages, 25 pair of heavy duty work gloves and a $1,000 check. They also sent us up to date PG&E area outage reports by fax.
- Volunteer Center sent volunteers to help continue sand bag filling. Their volunteers and the CCC also assisted with clean up.
- Roaring Camp offered their parking lot for flood victims to store their vehicles.
- Senior Network Services offered resources on call to visit seniors who may need assistance.
- St. Peter and Paul's Church provided volunteers to clean the mud from our driveway and to sand bag.
Wednesday, February 4th - Saturday, February 28th
- Salvation Army, Santa Cruz, donated 100 pairs of rain boots, 50 pairs of gloves, 100 flashlights, and 192 D cell batteries that they had received from Triple A Insurance Company.
- The United States Marine Corps Reserve Unit from San Bruno on February 8th provided two dozen Marines, 3 trucks equipped with a field kitchen to salvage our canned goods. They cleaned and sterilized 38,000 cans. They also shoveled out the ruined package goods and mud from our storage area and returned on February 9th to finish the job.
- California Youth Authority provided 6 men to help clean up VCUM and fill sand bags.
- American Red Cross delivered 225 meals from February 8th through February 11th for volunteers which was cooked by Mt Hermon Conference Center, 43 cleanup kits with brooms, mops, and cleaning supplies, 10 blankets, 6 boxes of band aids, and miscellaneous baby food and diapers.
- Amateur Emergency Radio Operators Bob and Kathy Fike continued to volunteer during rain fall times keeping everyone abreast of road closures and flooded areas.
- Government Cooperation and Assistance:
- Sheriff Mark Tracey visited to discuss disaster plan on February 3rd.
- HRA Chief Investigator Park Cusco visited and requested a list of our immediate needs. A list was provided which included a 20 yard dumpster. VCUM faxed Mr. Cusco all press releases, status reports and other information as requested.
- Susan Mauricilo, CAO, on Feb 3rd arranged for free waivers on three 20 yard dumpster needed to dispose of flood damaged supplies.
- Nancy Carr, OES, on Feb 7th approved our request for the National Guard stationed at Felton to bring a field kitchen and men to help salvage flood damaged canned food. The request was sent to State level OES, Mr. Leo Raske, who denied the request. He suggested we call in the Boy Scouts or the Salvation Army.
- Senator Bruce McPherson was contacted by VCUM regarding the denial of our request at State level. He phoned on Feb 7th at 4:45PM to let us know the Marines would arrive on Sunday, Feb 8th.
- County Planning Department Mark Denning was contacted to request a 24 hour inspection of the banks behind our building. Dave Hope and John Akeman inspected the creek banks and brought material to contain further erosion that was threatening the food pantry.
- County Supervisor, Jeff Almquist, made two visits to see the damage and offer his support.
- US Congressman, Tom Campbell, phoned on Feb 5th wanting to know our status and needs. He made a personal visit on Feb 14th with staff assistant, Casey Byer, and Department of Public Works Assistant Director, Thomas L. Bolish.
- County Environmental Health sent an inspector to discuss cleaning procedures and provided us with flyers to distribute to flood victims containing information on safe water, sewage disposal and hazardous materials cleaning.
- FEMA Community Relations, Vanessa Villery, toured the center and provided flyers and information for flood victims filing FEMA claims to be distributed by VCUM.
- SBA brought flyers and information regarding SBA loans available.
- Department of Public Works, County of Santa Cruz, Assistant Director, Thomas Bolish provided the names and phone numbers to contact to get approval and assistance removing leaning trees posing a threat to falling possible causing a log jam creating more flooding of Love Creek. Don Hill, Senior Civil Engineer Dept of Public Works and John B. Sutton, Department of Fish and Game arranged to apply for the permit, waive all fees, and remove the trees.
- Area Fire Departments - BLFD on Feb 4th appointed VCUM's Disaster Relief Center to be the staging site for sand and sand bag distribution. 7,000 sand bags and 134 yards of sand were delivered to VCUM.
- CDF contributed 2,000 sand bags.
- Communication lines were kept open between VCUM and all area fire departments and information of the availability of sand bags was provided to them.
