Valley Churches United Missions (VCUM) is a grassroots organization serving the needs of low-income residents in the San Lorenzo Valley and Scotts Valley. We are a nonprofit (501c3) that does not receive government funding or grants — we rely entirely on the generous donations of individuals and local businesses and organizations.
Neighbors helping neighbors.
Since its inception in 1982, Valley Churches United Missions has raised and distributed over $20 million dollars to residents in need, serving over 800 households in 2014 alone.
Operating with fewer than three paid staff members, we have 250+ active participants work year-round — bagging and distributing food, assisting clients with services, stocking shelves and doing many other jobs. The number of volunteers grows during the holiday season to help with increased needs, collection of donations, gift-wrapping and delivery of gift boxes for seniors. Unlike some volunteer-based organizations, our approach is to find motivated individuals, share the array of services we provide, and then encourage them to innovate and build on our portfolio of services. Many of the best ideas come from our dedicated volunteers.
We are fortunate to have a dedicated, tireless staff who keep things running smoothly throughout the year.
- David Mills, Executive Director, came on board in August 2014, filling Annette Marcum’s rather sizable shoes.
- Linda S. Lovelace, Director of Operations, has been with VCUM since 1989, working as a volunteer for 12 years before becoming VCUM’s first employee in 2001.
- Linda Meyer, Assistant Director of Operations, was such a dynamic volunteer that once extra help was needed in Operations, it was decided to bring her on board as an employee in 2010.
